  • Overview

    The Gene Construction Scientist I assembles, clones and purifies genes according to given specifications in preparation for final shipment to customers. This includes a variety of PCR methods and PCR Clean-up, bacterial transformation, colony selection, purification of genetic material, QC sampling, quantification and final shipment preparation. 


    Job Specific Essential Functions:

    • Uses a variety of lab equipment to process products, including use of thermal cyclers, automated liquid handling workstations, incubators, and auto clave
    • Maintains accurate and detailed product and instrument records
    • Adheres to safety regulations, lab SOPs, contamination controls, and complies with ISO 9001 and 14001 requirements
    • Purifies and quantifies products and samples for quality control tests
    • Recognizes process or equipment problems and seeks appropriate assistance
    • Uses custom software packages to complete tasks and create final products
    • Assesses QC data accurately to route and process products to meet outlined specifications
    • Translates order requirements to process and route, or formulate, oligonucleotides to the customer’s specifications
    • Contributes to and supports an efficient manufacturing environment
    • Complies with ISO 13485 handling requirements and follows documented custom instructions when applicable
    • Performs a variety of PCR protocols and subsequent post PCR cleanup steps
    • Performs a variety of restriction enzyme digests, appropriately handling enzymes
    • Executes multiple processes simultaneously (multi-tasks) to ensure efficiency in product handling
    • Uses aseptic techniques to minimize the risks of contamination to products
    • Utilizes a variety of DNA repair techniques, including site directed mutagenesis
    • Demonstrates behavior consistent with the Integrated DNA Technologies Core Values
    • Performs other duties as assigned



    • Associate’s degree in science related field plus 2 years of applicable lab experience required
    • Bachelor’s degree in a science related field preferred


    • Proficiency in a variety of PC software programs with strong working knowledge of Microsoft Office required
    • Experience with sterile techniques required
    • PCR and pipette experience required
    • Experience with gel electrophoresis technology preferred
    • Experience with sequencing data preferred

    Required Skills:

    • Manual dexterity and technical proficiency with pipetting and sample handling required
